Feitoria, Meruge, Douro 2008
Slightly less ripe aromatics but there’s a
smoky, earthy, mineral edge to the fruit. Sultry, soft strawberry and
redcurrant palate and silky, coffee bean oak and sweet, supple tannins add
polish. 18pts/20
Herdade do
Mouchão, Mouchão, Alentejo 2006
Delicious fruit, with enveloping chocolate
tones, the smoky and gamey notes of the Alicante Bouschet playing against hints
of herbal character. Fleshy substance, but longevity too. 18pts/20
Herdade da
Malhadinha Nova, Marias da Malhadinha, Alentejo 2007
Big, creamy, ripe cassis fruit nose and the
incense and gamey, earthy notes are deliciously complex. Rich, thick, sweet
fruit with creamy density, yet elegant. 18pts/20
Niepoort, Batuta, Douro 2008
From north-facing vineyards, this is cedary,
with dried herbs, fragrant spice and cherry and blackberry fruit. The palate
has beautiful juiciness and creaminess with unforced purity. 18pts/20
Prats & Symington, Chryseia,
Douro 2008
Fragrant sandalwood and fresh red and black
fruits, with schisty minerality too. No meatiness or earthiness to this wine,
which is plush but beautifully pitched. 18pts/20
Quinta da Falorca,
Lagar Reserva, Dão 2004
Expressive, almost eucalyptus top note to
cassis and mint, with a charry background. The palate has impressive ripeness,
the cappuccino silkiness of the oak adding creaminess to blackcurrant pastille
fruit. 18pts/20
Quinta do Infantado,
Reserva, Douro 2008
A muscular density that suggests some serious
concentration. Tight, ashy, tannic structure too – there’s a sinewy, meaty
richness that takes no prisoners. Massive. 18pts/20
Quinta do
Poeira, Poeira, Douro 2008
Bloody, meaty nose with depth and presence.
Strawberry flavours, with a briary note, harmony and length. 18pts/20
Quinta do Vale
Meão, Douro 2008
Impressively dark nose, with plush fruit and a
bold, liquorice richness. The palate has delicious juiciness and intensity,
fine tannins and punchy acidity. 18pts/20
Rui Reguinga,
Terrenus Reserva, Alentejo 2007
A barrel selection from two of the best
vineyards, this has a sweet balsamic nose, but is subtly layered with a touch
of mint leaf and caraway seed. Sophisticated, lean, sinewy palate that
is elegant. 18pts/20
Solar dos
Lobos, Grande Escolha, Alentejo 2008
Hugely intense, with a blood-streaked
concentration of red fruits, the violet lift and graphite minerality just
easing the impression of impenetrability. Serious and chewy stuff.
18pts/20
Wine & Soul, Pintas, Douro 2008
Really elegant lift to the fruit and very
fragrant incense-like oak. Lovely sweetness on the palate, with magical
brightness to the acidity and very firm tannin structure. Tight, ripe
density. 18pts/20
